food test (june): sebastian’s, leona’s, starbucks

Published July 30, 2014 by ladyemelye

before this month comes to a close, let me do a quick post on what new items i tried last june. ūüėÄ

sebastian’s: ¬†fudge cake and strawberry shortcake ala mode bars

additional flavors we tried from their summer line. (see previous post here)

fudge cake

fudge cake

for the chocoholic in each and everyone of us. ¬†ūüėČ ¬†it is composed of chocolate cake soaked in chocolate fudge, topped with dark chocolate ice cream, dipped in dark chocolate and then milk chocolate, and finished off with chocolate chips. ¬†just the number of times i mentioned the word “chocolate” in that sentence is enough to bring anyone into a chocolate high. ¬†it is very rich and indulgent, but not overpoweringly sweet.

strawberry shortcake

strawberry shortcake

i love strawberries that is why i did not let this pass.  the bar is made up of pound cake with strawberry sorbet, dipped in white chocolate with orange zest, and then drizzled with strawberry gelee and topped with a slice of strawberry.  it was a nice mixture of sweetness and zing.  what i like about this bar is that you taste the natural flavors, especially that of the strawberry.  i could easily eat two of this in a sitting.

leona’s: ¬†strawberry sensation and banana bread

eversince i have read this post from the first wives club blog, i’ve been asking my friends who went to cebu to buy me some of the baked goodies from leona’s. ¬†luckily, one them managed to get me two of their breads.

strawberry sensation loaf

strawberry sensation loaf

it looks and smells divine. ūüôā ¬†dense and flavorful bread with strawberries, strawberry ripple and topped with white chocolate. ¬†again, there is a play in the sweetness and tang of flavors. ¬†this was easily wiped off by my officemates and i.

unfortunately, i was not able to take a photo of the banana bread. ¬†but it has the same consistency with the strawberry loaf. ¬†it was not too sweet and it’s perfect to be paired with your cup of coffee.

starbucks:  strawberry cheesecake and banana chocolate

starbucks launched two new flavors and of course, we tried them. ūüôā

strawberry cheesecake and banana chocolate

strawberry cheesecake and banana chocolate

the strawberry cheesecake is very similar to the strawberries and cream frappuccino that starbucks already carries.  the main difference lies with the addition of vanilla syrup, cream cheese whip, strawberry drizzle and graham crumble bits on top.  i really did not taste the difference of the cream cheese whip versus the original whipped cream.  what i liked about this drink is the additional strawberry drizzle and the crunch that is provided by the graham crumble.

the banana chocolate is also officially launched, although this can be ordered before as a variant to the banana mango.  it is a combination of banana, milk, and chocolate sauce all blended together.  it was a nice treat and my son liked this very much.  another alternative if you are looking for a non-coffee drink.

hi-5 house hits in manila

Published July 23, 2014 by ladyemelye

the little boy loves watching hi-5.  he knows the songs, follows the dance steps and imitates whatever it is being done on-screen.

the hi-5 gang has already been here a couple of times before, but we were not able to watch them.  so when i read at ticketworld that they will be back this december, i was already on the lookout for tickets.

yesterday, i read a tweet from ticketworld announcing that the tickets are now being sold exclusively first to hsbc cardholders.

good thing our company’s payroll is thru hsbc, that is why i have a debit card which i can use. ¬†in addition to being the first ones being able to purchase tickets (best seats are being sold fast), the hsbc deal also comes with an additional 15% off the ticket price.

this exclusive deal is available from july 22 Рaugust 22, 2014.  tickets will then be available to the public by august 23.

i got our tickets last night! #superexcitedforthelittleboy

it’s a little sad that this is already the new cast as the little boy is more familiar with tim, fely, casey, stevie and lauren. ¬†nevertheless, i am sure he will still enjoy.

so what are you guys waiting for, here’s¬†how¬†you can purchase tickets:

baskin robbins ice cream: a monthful of flavors

Published July 8, 2014 by ladyemelye

this ice cream brand reopened it’s door once more to philippine customers last july 2. ¬†and there have been long lines since then. ¬†one afternoon, we braved the lines so that we could get a taste of this ice cream. ¬†a lot of people were definitely excited and they said that having a taste of this ice cream brings back fond memories from their childhood.

all their 31 flavors are available, so you can try one flavor a day, for a month, before deciding which is your favorite.  admittedly, it was very hard to choose which one to try first, so the queue affords you sometime before you make a decision and give your order.  you can even ask for samples of the flavors that you are eyeing so that you can finally take your pick.

so what’s in their menu? ¬†here are the offerings:

  • junior scoop: single (85.00), double (145.00), triple (195.00)
  • regular scoop: single (119.00), double (199.00), triple (279.00)
  • +20.00 for the waffle cone, +40.00 for the fancy waffle cone
  • pint (325.00)
  • quart (595.00)
  • half gallon (1150.00)
  • milkshakes (jamoca almond fudge, very berry strawberry, mint chocolate chip): small (150.00), medium (190.00), large (220.00)
  • blasts (cappuccino, mocha, caramel): small (110.00), medium (150.00), large (190.00)
  • fruit blasts (strawberry, mango):¬†small (110.00), medium (150.00), large (190.00)
  • build your own sundae: single (139.00), double (209.00), triple (279.00)
  • ice cream cake: 1/4 sheet (1100.00), full sheet (3850.00)

they have other items like the twist sundae – ice cream on top of a layer of toppings like hot fudge, almonds, whipped cream and cherries, flavor wave – mix and match of 5 mini scoops and shake mixology – milkshakes that combine two different flavors of your choice.

junior double scoop - chocolate chip cookie dough & love potion #31

junior double scoop – chocolate chip cookie dough & love potion #31

i got a junior double scoop consisting of chocolate chip cookie dough & love potion #31.  the chocolate chip cookie dough was just the right amount of sweetness and creaminess punctuated by bits of cookie dough and chocolate.  the love potion #31 is a winner for me.  i love the combination of the raspberry and the chocolate.  it is sweet, with a slight tang plus the richness of the chocolate.  this is a flavor i would not get tired of.

good thing this is just walking distance from our office. ¬†we could get ice cream anytime we feel like it. ¬†plus the fact that we could “burn” the calories by walking to and from. ūüėČ

holy week 2014: golden sunset + skyranch

Published July 5, 2014 by ladyemelye

for this year’s holy week break, the family went a little bit south. ¬†our destination: golden sunset village resort & spa.

golden sunset is a resort owned by ricky reyes. ¬†it is located at calatagan, batangas. ¬†from it’s website:

Golden Sunset¬†is one of the country’s premiere¬†resort, just a two-and-a-half-hour drive south of Metro Manila. Located in the historic town of Calatagan, Batangas, it is fast becoming the destination for vacationers and beachgoers alike.¬†Golden Sunset¬†has something for every member of your family: a¬†Serendipity Spa¬†where you can relax and unwind, an aviary¬†(Birds de Paradiso)¬†where your kids can learn more about birds and various restaurants where your whole family can wine and dine to different types of cuisines. Finally, the vacation you and your family truly deserve!

Golden Sunset offers to its guests the perfect mix of breathtaking natural features, world-class amenities, relaxing yet exciting leisure activities and excellent service from a courteous and well-trained staff: all the ingredients of a relaxing and memorable vacation in one destination! Take a stoll along our sandy boardwalk, swim in our crystal clear waters or simply marvel at the beauty of our golden sunset.

there are a lot of activities that you can do inside the resort. ¬†the only downside is that they have no actual beach area where you can swim. ¬†there is just some sort of shore. ¬†most of the waters in calatagan are like these — they are either rocky or they serve as fishpens.

they are not that strict with the bringing in of food and snacks. ¬†there are several restaurants that serve food inside the resort. ¬†you cannot use cash inside the resort for purchases. ¬†you will actually be issued a “passport” which will be loaded with a certain amount of credits based on how much the guest wants, and that is what will be used.

the front desk

the front desk

we got one deluxe room and one superior room. ¬†each room has one double bed, and two double beds. a mini living room with television, private toilet and bath, and an attic with extra provision for beddings. ¬†the room was ok, a little bit outdated and some of the facilities and fixtures need updating. ¬†also, the aircon wasn’t enough to cool the entire room on a hot summer day. ¬†the television didn’t have cable, and the reception from the antenna was bad.

pink jeepneys

pink jeepneys

to go around the property, you can walk, or you can ride one of these pink electric jeepneys driven by the resort’s staff. ¬†these are what you ride with your things from the front desk to the cottages/rooms that you have rented.

cultural show

cultural show

there is a teaser of the cultural show during noontime.  what we witnessed is a short number of hawaiian/hula dances.  there is a full length cultural show at night, around 8pm.

swimming pool slide

swimming pool slide

there are a lot of pools around the are, but the rooms were near the main pool.  these are two adjacent pools.  one is from 4ft Р6ft, with the  2-level slide.  next to it is a more shallow pool where my son enjoyed walking around in.  it also featured massage beds with rainfall showers that massage your whole body.

the golden sunset

the golden sunset

we strived to capture this scenery. ¬†the golden sunset from which the resort’s name came from. ¬†it is indeed beautiful to look at.

we had dinner at one of the restaurants which serve traditionall filipino food.  we had adobo, bulalo, fried fish and liempo.  after dinner and watching the cultural show (which also required some audience participation), we walked around the property.

rawr!

rawr!

the next day, we explored the “mini zoo” and the aviary. ¬†the little boy took a lot of pictures with the different animals – both alive and statues. ¬†we also went inside a pigeon/dove sanctuary where we saw lots of these species of birds, and even saw some eggs.

albino peacock

one of the highlights that we saw were the peacock.  we had to wait for a while before these birds showed their beautiful plumage.  it was indeed a treat.

after we checked out of the resort, since we took the tagaytay route, we stopped by one of the restaurants to have our late lunch of bulalo and tawilis.  and then we proceeded to sky ranch where we spent the rest of the day.

the sky eye

sky rider

of the rides available, we tried the sky eye together with hubby and the little boy. ¬†and of course, i couldn’t resist trying out the sky rider, which is their 300m long zipline.

after other rides and some snacks, we called it a day and went back home.
