food test (july & august): starbucks, sbc, chowking

Published September 14, 2014 by ladyemelye

the past months have been quite busy, and there was not much new things that i got to try out so i am combining my food test for july and august.

starbucks: banana chocolate puff, bacon parmesan stromboli, banana raspberry frappuccino, tiramisu frappuccino

banana chocolate puff - php 75.00

banana chocolate puff – php 75.00

i do not know if because i bought this in the morning, then ate it when i got home, that it was just ok for me.  this is a flaky and buttery pastry with chocolate and bananas inside.  the pastry is actually good.  i just feel that there wasn’t enough chocolate and that the taste of the bananas were a little overwhelming.

bacon parmesan stromboli - php 120

bacon parmesan stromboli – php 120

my new favorite at starbucks. i love anything with bacon!  this is a flaky, buttery, crunchy crust filled with bacon, tomato, parmesan and mozzarella.  i could easily finish one of this in a sitting.  you could taste all of the flavors in each bite.  the perfect savory pair to your coffee. 🙂  i hope this stays in the menu.

banana raspberry frappuccino - (grande) php 170 (venti) php 180

banana raspberry frappuccino – (grande) php 170 (venti) php 180

The Banana Raspberry Frappuccino® blended beverage combines the berry goodness of our Raspberry Blackcurrant juice with milk and a peeled banana

this is my favorite among the “banana” line of frappuccino that was launched.  it has the right amount of sweetness and tart. one good option if you are looking for a non-coffee based drink.

tiramisu frappuccino - (tall) php180 (grande) php190 (venti) php200

tiramisu frappuccino – (tall) php180 (grande) php190 (venti) php200

Tiramisu Frappuccino® blended beverage features our delicious blended coffee flavored with Tiramisu sauce then topped with bits of biscuits, cheesecake- inspired whipped cream, Tiramisu sauce drizzle and a dusting of cocoa powder.

the flavors of this drink is really nice.  i like the combination of the tiramisu sauce and the cheesecake whipped cream.  the sweetness was also just right.  although this could mean a lot of calories with all that sauce, whipped cream and cocoa powder. 😉

seattle’s best coffee: strawberry fields

strawberry fields

strawberry fields

again, i availed of this drink using my sbc planner coupon.  this is an ice-blended drink made of strawberry puree and crushed chocolate cookies, topped with whipped cream and that cute strawberry candy.  this is like the strawberry oreo ice cream that is available locally.  a little sweet for me, but if you are a fan of strawberry or cookies or both, then this is for you.

chowking: happy pao

happy pao (panda and piggy) - php 109

happy pao (panda and piggy) – php 109

these paos are just too darn cute that i bought a box of three while buying food from chowking.  the panda has chocolate inside, while the piggy is your asado siopao in a cuter form. 🙂  the chocolate pao was actually good.  the filling was not to sweet, and they did not scrimp on the amount so that you get chocolate from every bite.

happy eating! 🙂

i heart human nature

Published September 5, 2014 by ladyemelye

i’ve always been on the lookout for good products online.  back in 2008, i stumbled upon human nature.  i was excited that they were offering a lot of everyday products which are natural/organic, and at the same time it would not burn a hole in your pocket with the prices.

at first i just ordered some items to give away as christmas gifts to my officemates.  but then, i found myself wanting to buy more of their products so i decided to become a dealer instead.  i may not have too many customers but at least i can benefit from the discount buying stuff.

i’ve sold mostly to family, friends and officemates.  but there are also some strangers who just saw the banner outside our house and ordered stuff. 🙂  most of my christmas gifts would always include human nature products so that other people would also be aware of the products.

here are the products that i have been using (all of the photos has been grabbed from their website).

mineral makeup

i am not much of a makeup user.  i use makeup just for special occasions or photoshoots, and i try to keep it simple and light.

perfect glow mineral blush - php 275.00

perfect glow mineral blush – php 275.00

i use this mineral blush (pink bloom) just to give color to my cheeks.

natural tinted lip balm - php 89.75

natural tinted lip balm – php 89.75

i use the flame tree color which is more on the red side.  i love the fact that it is a lip balm which protects your lips, and at the same time it gives this nice color.  just perfect for everyday use.  plus the minty feel on my lips which i really like.

face care

cleanse. tone. moisturize.  the mantra for taking care of your skin.  for this, i use these products:

natural purifying facial scrub - php 104.75

natural purifying facial scrub – php 104.75

i use this scrub 2x to 3x a week, or if i was out all day knowing that my skin has become grimy.  i like the feeling of my face being squeaky clean thanks to the strawberry seeds and bamboo granules in this scrub.  also, it doesn’t feel tight or dry after washing.  the scent is a plus too since i like strawberries. 😉

balancing facial wash - from php 79.75

balancing facial wash – from php 79.75

this is what i use for my everyday face washing.  just a little amount of this and you will feel the cleansing all over your face.  it has elemi, marine extracts, sugar beet, aloe vera, bamboo scrubs and loofah.  i also like the orange scent which is refreshing.

balancing face toner - from php 99.75

balancing face toner – from php 99.75

this is the partner of the balancing facial wash, so i use this after washing my face, before putting on moisturizer.  it is gentle on the skin, but you are sure that your face is getting cleaned well.

natural day moisturizer - from php 149.75

natural day moisturizer – from php 149.75

to finish the face ritual, i put on this day moisturizer.  just a few drops goes a long way to effectively moisturize the face.  it has beet root extract and 15 essential vitamins and minerals to take good care of your face.

hair care

i have rebonded hair so i have to take extra care in using haircare products to ensure that it wouldn’t get damaged and that the rebonded effect will last much longer.

natural moisturizing shampoo - from php 49.75

natural moisturizing shampoo – from php 49.75

due to being chemically treated, my hair has a tendency to be dry.  that is why once i started using this moisturizing shampoo, i never turned back.  yes, it will not lather like your ordinary commercial shampoo, but you will know that your hair is clean and at the same time soft.  i have tried both the mandarin and vanilla scent, but i like the mandarin variant more.  it perks you up, especially when i use it in the morning.

moisturizing conditioner - from php 49.75

moisturizing conditioner – from php 49.75

i have used conditioner as far as i can remember.  and i really like my shampoo and conditioner to be of the same brand and variant, so that they support each others function. 🙂 this conditioner contains avocado, sunflower, soybean and virgin coconut oil so that your hair is thoroughly moisturized without the use of chemicals.

clarifying shampoo - from php 149.75

clarifying shampoo – from php 149.75

once in a while, i use this clarifying shampoo.  it is like a restart for my hair as it ensures that it gets rid of the build up and impurities that my hair inevitably gets.

daily hair treatment - php 299.75

daily hair treatment – php 299.75

before it was phased out, i used hhn’s intensive hair mask.  then they released this new product.  i use this once a week to get my hair deeply moisturized.

body care

here are the other items which i use for body care.

natural healthy lotion - from php 64.75

natural healthy lotion – from php 64.75

i do not like wearing heavy and sticky lotions.  that is why i usually put lotion once i am already in the office.  when you open my office bin, you will see the berry bliss variant of this lotion.  i like that it is light and fast absorbing.  and i can’t resist the fruity scent it leaves on my skin.

natural feminine wash (chamomile cool) - from php 54.75

natural feminine wash (chamomile cool) – from php 54.75

i’ve been using the popular local brand for intimate care.  but my ob-gyne warned me that using the product too much might cause dryness and remove some of the natural protection which could lead to itching or infection.  i am happy i found this.  it is all natural that you can use it as often as you want.  i like the cooling sensation that this variant has.

all natural spray sanitizers - from php 59.75

all natural spray sanitizers – from php 59.75

i have this everywhere. in my office bin, my bag, the baby bag.  you never know when you need to sanitize and/or deodorize your hands or other stuff and this comes handy.  as it does not contain harmful chemicals, it won’t harm your skin and safe to use even for the little ones.  i use the cool burst scent which smells like mint and feels like it too.

vanilla exfoliating bar - php 84.75

vanilla exfoliating bar – php 84.75

since hhn retired their body scrub, i have been looking for an alternative.  good thing they came up with this soap.  it is their signature cold-pressed soap with loofah exfoliants which cleanse the skin.  so even though i am just taking a quick shower, i feel really clean.  i just wish this would be available in another scent like lavender as i am not much a fan of the vanilla scent.

balm for all seasons - php 99.75

balm for all seasons – php 99.75

i always carry this around in my purse.  it is effective against headache, dizziness or if just need to take a breather from your stress.  it is like spa in little jar.

for my boys

i also “force” my hubby and son to use hhn products. 🙂

natural baby wash - from php 49.75

natural baby wash – from php 49.75

ever since my son was born, this is the baby wash that we use to bathe him.  it can be used for both the hair and the body.  it cleans and moisturizes the skin well.  the scent is good too, leaving that new baby smell all day long.

kids natural shampoo and body wash (tangerine tarsier) - from php 129.75

kids natural shampoo and body wash (tangerine tarsier) – from php 129.75

when my son started to become an active toddler, i switched from the baby wash to this.  it has the same cleansing properties as the baby wash. plus it has coco nectar, avocado oil and aloe vera which nourishes and moisturizes the hair and skin.  the tangerine scent lasts long too, even if my son has been playing all day.

bug shield DEET free lotion - php 99.75

bug shield DEET free lotion – php 99.75

this is our best friend this rainy season.  with my son going to school, and i am not sure if there are mosquitoes there, i make sure that he is protected from those nasty bites.  i also apply this to him before he goes out to play.

black diamond natural shampoo with revitalizing peppermint - from php 149.75

black diamond natural shampoo with revitalizing peppermint – from php 149.75

hubby uses this shampoo.  it keeps him from developing dandruff plus it has a minty feel after use.  even i use this sometimes if i want to feel refreshed from a very hot day. 😉

pure strength black diamond cleansing bar - php 72.75

pure strength black diamond cleansing bar – php 72.75

natural scented cleansing bar - php 74.75

natural scented cleansing bar – php 74.75

hubby is a little picky when it comes to the body soap that he uses.  that is why i was glad when he really liked the hhn soaps.  he uses the black alternately with the lemon/aloe variant.  i like the lavender on the other hand.

our home

we also use hhn products for our home

natural hand soap - from php 59.75

natural hand soap – from php 59.75

we have this near our sink, and i also have a smaller one in the baby bag.  since the ingredients are from our coconut, it effectively cleans the hands without drying it.  i also like that it is effective in removing the smell of food from my hands when i prep or cook.  we have the citrus variant, but i am keen to try the apple scent next.

tough love 100% natural powder detergent - php 199.75

tough love 100% natural powder detergent – php 199.75

since hhn came up with this product, this is the detergent that we use in washing my little boy’s clothes.  this is all natural and doesn’t leave any residue or cloying scent in his clothes, which could cause allergies.

tough love natural dishwashing liquid - from php 99.75

tough love natural dishwashing liquid – from php 99.75

this dishwashing liquid is tough on grease.  just a few drops and you can be sure that your plates, pots and everything else will be clean.  and the smell is really nice.

precious herbal pillows (small pillow) - php 599.00

precious herbal pillows (small pillow) – php 599.00

i love this product.  you can use it both as a hot and cold compress.  it is very useful for sore muscles, aching backs, sprains or whatever.  it also smells therapeutic with all the herbs it contains.  we use this a lot.

human nature is pro-philippines, pro-poor and pro-environment.  so you can be sure that for every world-class product that you use, you are supporting the local community in your own way.  plus, you aren’t dumping anything toxic to the earth.  talk about a win-win situation. 😀

so if you are interested to try out the products, you can download and print the voucher below so you will get 15% discount when you go to hhn stores.  click here for a list of participating branches.

wildflour: cafe + bakery

Published August 8, 2014 by ladyemelye

i have already done a post before regarding the cronuts of wildflour.  but of course, i wanted to try out the food.

hubby and i first tried it out for lunch.  he had a meeting nearby, so we met at wildflour for lunch.  here is what we got:

tomato soup (php 90)

tomato soup (php 90)

the soup is simply made of tomatoes, basil and parmesan.  hubby loves his tomato soup, and he gets one whenever he can.  i can say that this is a good starter to warm up your tummies before your main meal.

pork chop (695)

pork chop (php 695)

hubby had the pork chop for his main meal.  it consists of porkchop (a generouse size, mind you), sweetcorn puree, wild mushrooms, whole grain mustard.  at first look, he was a little skeptical.  but the pork was tender and the sauce was really good.

crispy duck confit (php 590)

crispy duck confit (php 590)

bring me somewhere that has duck confit in their menu, and i most likely would get that.  this was served with lentils and apple slaw.  the skin of the duck was indeed very crispy.  the meat was tender that i did not have a hard time tearing it apart. 🙂 it was also very flavorful, the way duck is.  the lentils provided contrast and the apple slaw had the right amount of sweetness and sourness to break through the monotony of eating duck.

crimson berry iced tea (php 110)

crimson berry iced tea (php 110)

i got this iced tea for my drink.  it was just a simple iced tea with berry flavors.

pastel de tres leches (php 210)

pastel de tres leches (php 210)

this was our sweet ending.  three kinds of milk mixed in with cake cubes plus caramel on top.  i like that it wasn’t overly sweet and that the cake had a nice texture to it.

we had a very good lunch that day and we were satisfied with the food that we had.

i work in the building across the street from wildflour.  so every morning, when hubby drops me off, we always see that there are a lot of people (especially foreigners) who were having breakfast at wildflour.  so one day, we decided to try out their breakfast menu.  do note that they are offering a different menu during breakfast.

wildflour breakfast (php 290)

wildflour breakfast (php 290)

this consists of 2 eggs (cooked the way you like it), cripsy potatoes, pork sausage and toast.  it’s like the more upscale (in terms of serving size and flavor) of mcdonald’s big breakfast. 😉  i liked the crispy potatoes with its crunch on the outside and mushiness of the potato inside.

croque madame (php 420)

croque madame (php 420)

this is a big sandwich, i wasn’t able to polish it off.  it was ham, gruyere and fried egg on top of a brioche bun.  it was delicious and very filling.  i how the flavors all melded into the bread.

20131216_132708_wm

hazelnut hot chocolate (php 160)

this was my morning drink for that day.  it was like eating nutella in a semi liquid form. 🙂  however, i did find it a little bit too sweet for my taste and little too thick.  maybe they could ease up on the nutella (which i am sure they put in here) given the size of the cup.

i enjoyed eating at wildflour both times.  although prices are a little steep, you can see that the servings are generous and the the quality and taste is of high standards.  i would love to try other items in the menu like the mac and cheese, grilled cheese sandwich and kimchi fried rice. 😀

a taste of slice

Published August 4, 2014 by ladyemelye

i’ve first heard about slice because of their cupcakes.  so when i moved to a job at bonifacio global city last year, i grabbed a box of some of these cupcakes.

box of 4 cupcakes

box of 4 cupcakes

of course i got the famous choco yema (php 60) cupcake.  beside it is the oh my ube (php 80).  the one with the green frosting is candyland.  i forgot what flavor is the one on the lower left, but the cupcake is colored pink. 🙂

the choco yema was definitely a winner.  the combination of chocolate plus the creaminess of the yema was really good.  i also like the oh my ube.  it was an ube flavored cupcake with cream cheese frosting and some coconut shreds providing some texture.  i got candyland for the little boy.

last month, hubby and i were looking for someplace at high street central wherein we could have brunch before seeing a movie.  we decided to eat at slice to check out their all day breakfast.

slice scrambled + kalemonade

slice scrambled + kalemonade

hubby got the slice scrambled (php 150).  this consists of baked scrambled 2 whole eggs with cheese.  there are 3 different variants and he chose smoked bangus + red eggs + scallion + tomato.  this was served together with a bowl of mixed brown rice.  according to him the scrambled egg was really flavorful and the meal was filling.

for his drink, he got the kalemonade (php 100) which is kamote-infused lemonade.  it does taste like your usual lemonade, however you can also taste the hint of the kamote leaves.

panini + raving raspberry

panini + raving raspberry

i ordered the pizza panini (php 150).  it was filled with cheese, pepperoni, ham and mushrooms.  the filling was very tasty and full of ingredients.  the panini was also toasted very nicely.

for the drink, i got the raving raspberry (php 100) which is your typical raspberry juice.

we were really satisfied with the food that we ate here, that we were still not feeling hungry even after the 2-hour movie.

if you are looking for a place that serves healthy food, but doesn’t compromise the flavor, then this restaurant should be on your list.  i will definitely be back to try out the other items in their menu, especially those for dessert. 😀

tranquility at t house

Published August 2, 2014 by ladyemelye

whenever we are in need of a quick getaway from work and other stress, we always opt for a tagaytay staycation.  and one of our favorite places to stay in is t house.

we have been going to this place way back 2007.  we used to avail of their set dinner which included 2 choices of soup (served in cute shot glasses), a salad, an entree, dessert and drinks.  this is no longer being offered.

almost once a year, we have an overnight stay in this very cozy bread and breakfast place.  here are some of our stays:

we have been frequenting the place, that most of the staff already recognizes us. 😉

last june, in celebration of their 7th year annivesary, they had a promo where you only had to add php 7.00 on top of your room rate and you will get a set meal for two and a massage for two.  we decided to have this as our post father’s day celebration.

upon checking in, we were informed by the front desk that there was some kind of conference that was going on and they were occupying the regular rooms (which we always book).  because of this, we were upgraded to stay in a suite, free of charge. 😀

our suite

aside from having a very large room space, there was also a sofa.  in the bathroom we had the usual toilet and bath area plus a bath tub where the little boy enjoyed taking a bath.  t house also now has a swimming pool but we haven’t had checked it out yet.

here is the set menu which was included in the promo.  we availed it during dinner of our first day.

breakfast is always included in the room rate and you get to choose from a wide range of items available.  i usually go for the spanish-style tawilis, but unfortunately it was not available that time.  also included are bread basket with butter, seasonal fruits and your choice of coffee or fresh juice.

one the things i look forward to, in all of our stays at t house, is the goodnight tea.  they deliver to your room an herbal tea together with some pastries. 🙂

the massage included in the promo is also good.  the therapists are very good in kneading out the stress in our bodies and i felt very relaxed thereafter.

another thing that i like about t house is their set of green tea + honey toiletries which they source locally from ilog maria.  i just love the refreshing smell of it.

if you are looking for a place to unwind, with nice surroundings and good food, t house is definitely worth checking out.
