birthday trip 2014: macau day 2

Published October 21, 2014 by ladyemelye

it’s my birthday! we started off the day by having a sumptuous shrekfast 🙂

welcome to shrekfast

welcome to shrekfast

shrekfast is the breakfast buffet offered by the holiday inn.  what makes it different is that you have a chance to interact and mingle with some of the dreamworks characters.  also there are themed food. 🙂 they have a wide selection of asian and western food so whatever you might want for breakfast, there is a good chance you will find it.

while eating, dreamworks characters will appear per movie, do a little dance number, and then they will go down to the audience and you can take your photos with them.  exception to this is the how to train your dragon gang.  since toothless is too big to move around, they stayed at the stage and we lined up to meet them there.

after breakfast, we got ready for our trip for that day.  we boarded the shuttle bus going to sands macau, and from there we took a taxi to macau tower for my birthday skyjump. 😀

macau tower observatory

macau tower observatory

from the aj hackett website:

Designed and invented in New Zealand, Skyjump is a controlled decent experience and you jump from the same platform as Bungy at 233m/764ft.

SkyJump can be described as Base Jumping, while attached to a wire cable – just like a movie stuntman! Your descent takes around 17 seconds before you come to a very smooth landing (on your feet) at the ground floor plaza at the base of the tower.

Skyjump is different from Bungy jumping as you don’t free fall or rebound and you jump in a standing position and stay that way all the way to the ground.

It’s a one way vertical drop – Hang on!

so i signed up, paid the fee, geared up, and waited for my turn at the platform.

ready to jump!

ready to jump!

as i have told many who asked, the only fear you have to conquer is that of getting off that platform.  once you have jumped, it is just an amazing, freeing feeling. probably somewhat like flying. it was one of the best 17 seconds of my life.

wooooohooooo!

wooooohooooo!

i would gladly do that again.

after the jump, we had snacks at a cafe at the ground floor of the tower, then we went to wynn macau to watch the golden dragon and the tree of prosperity.

after this, we rode a shuttle back to the ferry terminal.  and there we got a shuttle which took us to the galaxy hotel.  there we watched the fortune diamond and the wishing crystals.  we also were able to catch the signature peacock performance.

again, we bought dinner from mcdonald’s (i think we bought at the mcdonald’s branch at every hotel) and went back to our hotel to eat and rest.

it was a super fun day and i enjoyed spending my birthday with my loved ones, and of course crossing something off my bucket list. 🙂

food test (april): mcdonald’s, krispy kreme, spam, starbucks and sebastian’s

Published May 9, 2014 by ladyemelye

i have been eating a lot of sweets lately.  here are my “firsts” for april.  🙂

mcdonald’s: sans rival mcflurry

sans rival mcflurry

sans rival mcflurry

this is part of the dreamy decadence desserts the the fastfood has launched for summer.  i am just not sure if it is real sans rival cake that they mix into the ice cream, but every spoonful definitely tastes like one.  all of the creamy butter flavor plus the vanilla ice cream is a winner.  hubby orders this everytime we go for drive-thru.

krispy kreme: the colors of summer doughnuts

colors of summer doughnuts (right side)

for a limited time this summer, krispy kreme launched the colors of summer donuts which include the lemon, raspberry and blueberry summer flavors.

lemon summer doughnut – lemon flavored vanilla icing with leaf-green, lemon-yellow and sky-blue swirls

raspberry summer doughnut – raspberry flavored vanilla icing with christmas-red, baker’s rose and burgundy wine swirls

blueberry summer doughnut – blueberry flavored vanilla icing with sky-blue, violet and christmas-red swirls

the doughnuts with their colors are really nice to look at.  the fruity flavor had a good contrast with the sweetness of the vanilla icing.  my son liked the raspberry doughnut (though he took a bite in all of our doughnuts), while i prefer the blueberry one.

spam tocino

spam tocino

spam tocino

this variant of spam has been making it’s rounds on social media feeds that is why when i saw it at the grocery, i just had to  buy one so that we could taste what the buzz is about.

from the spam website:

Continuing to expand on the global brand, an exciting new flavor- SPAM® Tocino is now exclusively available in the Philippine market. Traditionally served with rice and eggs, Tocino is a sweetened cured pork dish with Spanish influence and will also be available for purchase on SPAM.com

we cooked it the usual way we cook spam, which is fried until it is slightly well done and a little bit crispy. 🙂  it is a sweeter version of the spam that we have been used to, but the sweetness is very subtle unlike what we have in our tocino.  this can be an alternative to your usual rice pairings, or if you are a lover of both spam and tocino, then this one is for you.

starbucks: caramel ribbon crunch and chocolate crepe cake

caramel ribbon crunch

caramel ribbon crunch

from the nomnomclub.com website:

the caramel ribbon crunch is a coffee-based blended beverage with generous layers of the new dark caramel sauce, whipped cream, caramel drizzle and topped with crunchy caramel sugar

the beverage was good, but it was a little too sweet for my taste.  perhaps it is because of the amount of the caramel that is infused with the drink plus the additional ones at the topping.  this is sort of like a sweeter caramel macchiato in frap form.

chocolate crepe cake

chocolate crepe cake

i like the chocolate crepe very much.  it is layers of crepe and chocolate plus cocoa powder on top.  the good thing about it is, it is not too sweet.  somewhat reminds me of dark chocolate flavor.  the bad thing about it is, it is not too sweet – hence the tendency to eat more.

sebastian’s: mango fruitsicle and vanilla brownie bar

mango fruitsicle

mango fruitsicle

sebastian’s has always been one of my favorite stores when it comes to artisanal ice creams.  i love their unique flavors.  this summer, they are launching a new line of fruitsicles and ala mode bars.  new flavors are to be released weekly.

eating the mango fruitsicle was like eating a frozen ripe mango.  it is sweet and creamy and chunks of mango are embedded within the bar.  it is very refreshing.

vanilla brownie ala mode

vanilla brownie ala mode

vanilla brownie ala mode: chocolate cake topped with vanilla ice cream, dipped in vanilla white chocolate then in dark chocolate, with cake sprinkles.

if you love cake and ice cream, and chocolate, then this is the bar for you.  it is a perfect blend of vanilla and chocolate flavors.  i like the vanilla ice cream from sebastian’s as it doesn’t take artificial like most of the commercial brands..  it also helps that the chocolate is not too sweet.

more to come this summer! 🙂

amazing race malaysia: day 1

Published April 29, 2014 by ladyemelye

we decided to celebrate my son’s 3rd birthday via a trip to legoland in malaysia.  we were not able to secure sale tickets to singapore that is why we had to go via the kuala lumpur route.  i will be posting this trip via the days. 🙂

march 5:

our flight to KL was via cebu pacific.  the flight was uneventful, and there was just a delay in our arrival due to the air traffic at the LCCT.

in-flight entertainment

in-flight entertainment

because we will be taking another flight to johor bahru (where legoland is), after we have cleared immigration and claimed our baggages, we proceeded to the domestic departure area.  we checked in on our flight, processed our bags and then went to mcdonald’s for snack/dinner.

busy with their gadgets - at mcdonald's kl

busy with their gadgets – at mcdonald’s kl

we make it a point to eat at a mcdonald’s for every place that we go to.  here in kl, they have the usual burgers and chicken.  the fries and drinks that are included with a meal are large sized.  they also have shakes and frostees.

after we had eaten, we went around some of the stores at the terminal and then stayed at the boarding gate and waited for our flight.

while waiting

while waiting

the wifi signal at the terminal is very strong so it makes waiting for your flight bearable.  we were even able to do a clear skype call to my mom who is in philippines.

after some delay, we were able to board the air asia flight going to jb.  the flight was around 50 minutes.  when we arrived at senai airport (which is really nice and very clean as compared to lcct), we just waited a little bit for our bags, and then we were met by someone from our hotel since we arranged transportation going to the hotel.

we stayed at KSL resorts in JB.  we availed of a “facebook” promo wherein there is a certain discount given to those who likes their fb page.

the room was spacious, with a queen sized bed + a single bed.  the bathroom had a rainfall shower.  the basic amenities that one would need for their room are present.  we were allowed to connect two devices to the free wifi of the hotel.

the only thing we had difficulty with was with the power outlets.  we assumed that the hotel has generic sockets, but it turns out that we needed an adaptor so that we will be able to plug in and charge our devices.  good thing that there was a mall at the lower level of the hotel so we were able to get one the next day.

once we had checked in and settled in our room, we ordered for food as our dinner / midnight snack. 🙂  hubby had wanton noodles while i had congee.  the wanton noodles was good as it had the right flavors and the noodles were still springy and not overcooked.  the congee was ok too, it just needed a little getting used to since i am not a big fan of chinese congee wherein you need to put all the spices and condiments so that your congee will have its flavor.

we turned in for the night and readied ourselves for our adventure the next day.

food test (march): cbtl and mcdonald’s

Published March 27, 2014 by ladyemelye

here are the “new” items which i sampled for this month and what i think of them. 🙂

coffee bean and tea leaf:  melon mint frutea and macarons.

cheese muffin, melon mint frutea, macarons

cheese muffin, melon mint frutea, macarons

for summer, cbtl launched three new frutea flavors:  pomelo frutea, pure melon iced blended and melon mint frutea.  the first i tried is the melon mint frutea.

i am not sure of the exact composition of this drink is, but it has mint, green tea and melon flavors.  i really like how the flavors blended together and i could imagine myself indulging in this during a hot day.  the mint added an additional “freshness” zing.  i just wish that i could also get this over ice rather than ice blended.

they have also started offering macarons.  they offer 5 sets which include two flavors in each set.  a set costs php 165.00.  the flavors are vanilla & coffee, orange & raspberry, lemon & earl grey, chocolate & passion fruit and salted caramel.  i got the orange & raspberry set.

i was a little bit disappointed with the size.  i was not able to take a comparison picture but each macaron is smaller than a 5-peso coin.  so pricewise, you are not getting what you paid for.  my officemates even thought that it was a toy/keychain.  and also after biting into it, the macaron crumbles.  but flavorwise, it was good.  i liked the fruit flavors infused in the filling of the macaron.  on any other day, i would still go to bar dolci for my macaron fix.

mcdonald’s: black forest coke mcfloat

this month, mcdonald’s also released a new line for their dreamy decadence desserts: tiramisu coke mcfloat, black forest coke mcfloat, sans rival mcflurry, cookie butter mcflurry (albeit this was released before) and mango mcdip.

after my bout with tonsilitis, i got the black forest coke mcfloat.  the website’s description:

go for something richer with the Black Forest Coke McFloat, a party in your mouth with every spoonful of hot fudge and cherry-flavored topping.

i liked the cherry flavor in the float since it gives a little different zing to it.  coming to the end of the drink though, i wasn’t able to detect the taste of the cherry anymore.  perhaps i would like this better as a sundae, rather than as a float.

i am now curious to try the other flavors which have come out. 🙂

mcdonalds: additional cost for breakfast

Published May 8, 2012 by ladyemelye

for breakfast yesterday, i went to mcdonalds for a takeout of the longganisa meal (scrambled eggs) + iced tea.

i was a little bit surprised when the cashier told me that there is an additional Php 5.00 for the iced tea.

image

it used to be that for breakfast meals, you could choose coffee, hot choco, regular softdrinks, regular oj or regular iced tea. but now, you have to pay extra for oj or iced tea. oh well…

another thing i noticed, they are now using green leaf iced tea instead of nestea.
